Beginners Tips for the Enneagram Journey

Digging into the enneagram can be exciting, annoying, overwhelming, confusing, fun and terribly scary (um, did someone steal my diary?!). Here are some important beginnings I would encourage anyone to consider when approaching this ancient tool:

1. Test results can be conditional. While I’m certainly not anti-test, every Enneagram teacher I’ve ever learned from says you should study all of the types to discover your type. I’ll provide my favorite books this week!

2. It’s important to learn about all of the types because this will help you better love, empathize, accept and understand the people you come in contact with every day.

3. Honestly, the history is wildly fascinating and the type structures can even be reflected in Odysseus’ journey from Homer’s Odyssey. Yep. 8th Century BC. More on that later.

4. Discovering your type can take some time. Some of the best teachers I know were mistyped for a while. I will provide a diverse list of resources to help with this along the way. Hang in there, my friend. I promise it’s worth it.

5. Now that we’ve gotten to type and you’ve read the good, bad, the funny and the ugly about your type... know that this is just the beginning. There are many layers to this work. I’m excited to share the resources I have for this as we go. If you hang in there with me, I think you’ll find a beauty about yourself and the world around you that you’ve been grasping for all along.
